I introduced Boy Seymour to a TV favourite of mine from the 90s recently – the classic that is Game On.
It’s genius, hilarious, nostalgic and brilliant. And also completely non-pc.
Surely the 90s weren’t that long ago?
Anyway, I needn’t worry about the out-dated references affecting my son, I am pleased to say. He is a child of his time, and a few minor historical discrepancies notwithstanding, is an all-round, accepting, politically correct kind of a guy.
To prove my point, I would like to list his activities from this weekend past;
- He drove a 4 tonne dumper truck round the garden, helping Big Seymour out with his latest “project” that involves moving mud from one place to another. And often back again.
- He went on a sleepover to his friend’s house where they played video games, probably stayed up all night and then rode a Husqvarna TC5 motorbike the day after. He mowed the neighbour’s lawn, then “supervised” his older sister’s driving practise, as we drove him back to sleepover central to collect his bag that he had annoyingly forgotten.
- He then arranged yet another social, this time involving his pushbike with the broken brakes and the South Downs and lots of hills, and in the same breath managed to arrange himself a holiday to Andalucia in August.
- …and in contrast to all those testosterone-fuelled antics, when he came back down from the Downs he was sporting a newly pierced left earlobe, that matched his friend’s newly pierced left earlobe, begotten from kits they had simultaneously ordered for themselves from Temu for £1 and packed in their rucksacks to take up the hill. By gosh, those kits have done some travelling.
The boy is embracing it all, masculinity and more typically feminine vibes all at the same time. And apart from the fact that he was really, really sneaky in his piercing escapade and probably not very hygienic, I am quite proud that he is not afraid to wear a diamanté stud. Apparently, it signifies that he is (I quote) “in his prime”.
I was less impressed when Little Seymour Number Two explained that an earring for boys is all the rage again now, and might not have been quite the diversification from gender norms I was hoping for. So… this might just be a fashion following mission or the latest trend that I was unaware of, or can’t understand, like the strange hair they have these days (fringe-up puffy mullet fades*, I shall call them) and trousers round their arses, and Nike Airforces. But his twinkly ear lobe , alongside his shiny, newly brace-free, straight teeth, are signs that he is comfortable in his skin, about which I am delighted.
My funny little wonky boy is growing up!
Game on!
