Hexagonal tiles… the idea is nice. But the reality is painful.
Poor Big Seymour spent A WHOLE DAY at the weekend, cutting and placing sodding hexagonal tiles on a window surround. By the end of job, he was seeing six sides on everything and was in need of a holiday.
Why hexagonal tiles? You may ask.
Well because they were cheap, of course! When faced with the dilemma of what to adorn our walls with, ours is not a choice between colours, or styles or indeed what we like and what we don’t; it’s basically all about what we find reduced to an acceptable amount of money! Especially now The Budget is all gone.
And so, on an outing to a doomed Homebase, when we discovered boxes of tiles all going for a song, fate forced our hand.
And now our family bathroom wall looks like the TV screen when Blockbusters was on, on only grey, not blue.
How appropriate for a room dedicated to ablutions! “I’ll have a pee, please Bob!”
And do you know what…? I love it!
Modern Edwardiana, I shall call it. Grey offset with white in places, plus a smattering of left-over oak-effect tiling and a touch of public convenience, too (for there were also cheap, shiny, big, white, rectangular tiles which we couldn’t resist either).
It’s opulent, but stylish. It’s compact and bijou. And it was a bloody bargain!
Eventually, I am sure Big Seymour will come to see its beauty. But for now, he never wants to set eyes on a hexagon again – even when I tell him that I just discovered on t’internet that “hexagons appear in honeycombs because they’re the most efficient way to fill a space with the least amount of material”.
If Big Seymour were a bee, maybe this theory would work. But for a human, a whole day to tile a window surround is not efficient! Not when the Funny Little Bungalow’s snag list is still so bloomin’ long…
It’s a good job he’s a worker!
