So the play is cancelled.
After months of rehearsals, stress, worry and fear, the play that was proving so tricky is now on hold until October, unless the world is over by then.
I was disappointed – I was ready to go! To get it done. To put it behind me – hopefully having done my best, and move forward: highlight my hair, cut in a fringe, forget my lines…
But no. The global pandemic (or hysteria thereof) has put paid to so many things, and we are now all experiencing something new. Our society is not used to restrictions.
It is scary. This virus seems to have the power to terrify the powers that be all over the world into enforcing a near-apocalyptic lockdown. Our own government – stalwart as it usually is – is now beginning to show its own fear.
I am trying not to worry, though. Without wanting to tempt fate or belittle the situation, I suspect we are simply trying to protect our vulnerable and minimise the stress on the NHS. The majority of the population should sail through this without much ado, fingers crossed.
In actual fact, I think it is a good thing that we are to be reminded of just how lucky we are to live in a free country with services and supplies ordinarily at our disposal. Maybe, after this, we will waste less, and not take anything for granted. They managed it in the war, with the threat of bombs dropping overhead.
Poor Little Seymour Number One, though. She’s all in a tizz. She has worked so hard for her GCSEs, that she’s worried it will all go out of the window. Plus, she was looking forward to a summer of freedom. I have told her not to worry – that this could actually work out to her advantage. Most of her friends have not taken mocks seriously. She has. Bless her.
Anyway – I have just had an email. Little Seymour Number Two will be off school as of tomorrow. (She’ll be delighted.) I have never been a fan of home-schooling, but here goes! I am sure it will be like pulling teeth. But if the buggers think they’re sitting on an iPad all day, they are sorely mistaken.
Please expect many blog updates over the coming days (weeks…months… years… ?!) in a series entitled “Home-Schooling the Four Little Seymours”.
Oh dear God alive. I’m dreading it.
