I am confused.

I thought the Corona virus was a global pandemic. I was under the impression that this was nature’s way of telling us, as a species out of control, that we must take more care in all aspects of our lives. That we must change our ways -even just a little – if we are to move forward out of this crisis.

What I didn’t realise was that the Corona virus is a political matter.

Maybe that is because I am naive.

Who knows the right way to deal with something like this? Politicians? Doctors? Only scientists have a hope of doing so – people whose mission in life has always been to study and to learn. And right now, scientists in this field are proving their worth, working away to find cures, tests and vaccines.

We, the people, are largely clueless. People like me listen to Boris. He is our Prime Minister, after all. I quite like him (sorry to my leftie friends) and I hope I can trust him. I try to do (mostly) as he says. Although it is sometimes difficult.*

I became very cross when that scientific adviser met his married lover, going against his own “lockdown” advice. I was confused at that point. Here was a scientist, not really proving his worth. I think my issue was in part that he was meeting his married lover, but of course, he was not exactly social distancing, either.

This “lockdown” thing is dragging on. I appreciate the severity of the virus. It is very frightening. But I have heard of many lonely people who say they would rather die than be cut off from the world forever in this way. It is just so bad for mental wellbeing.

*I started this post a week ago. I was all set to praise the government for its brave and difficult handling of an unprecedented, deadly and catastrophic scenario. I don’t have a solution to this problem – so I was supportive of our government’s efforts to try to find one.

And then Cummingsgate happened.

I am now lost for words. I agree that focusing on him and what he did distracts us from the main issue of the global epidemic, and we should move away from that. But I would like answers, because I’m very confused as to why some people, Boris included, seem to think he has done nothing wrong. Either many of us are misunderstanding the government’s advice, or we are not being told something here. People make mistakes, but they usually hold their hands up. Here, as far as I can see, Cummings was caught red-handed, but is still refusing to acknowledge his faux-pas/mistake/crime, whatever way you want to look at it.

Is Dominic Cummings secretly in charge of the country?

No wonder I don’t understand politics.
