I have decided, as it’s 2019, that I must modernise. And so, I will draw The Four Little Seymours in colour from here on in.
Revolutionary, I know.
This is largely based upon a small fascination I have developed with the wonderful, inimitable Raymond Briggs. I always knew he was a legend, and I have grown up devouring his books, but recently, after doing a bit of research, I have discovered that he is far cooler than I could ever have imagined. He goes to charity shops. He still has the mirror that was featured in his parent’s life story, Ethel and Ernest. He has milk delivered out of loyalty to his father’s profession, and his success came about really because he wasn’t deemed “good enough” to be a fine artist. (Or so I have deduced.)
I now have a lovely picture of Raymond Briggs as my screen saver, and I am avidly searching for a cheap copy of When The Wind Blows.
I’m a little worried, though. Last time I started to publicly “admire” a celebrity, he was dead within a month – poor old River. I grieved for weeks. I even wrote to his mum. I do hope old Raymond doesn’t follow suit. It’s very comforting to know that he is still drawing away somewhere down the road, not too far away, albeit perhaps more slowly than he once did.
Anyway, in honour of him, and because I need to shake things up, I have introduced some colour to my funny little pictures. I won’t use paint – I’m not a fan of paint. It’s messy and requires planning and preparation – who needs all that malarky? Perhaps I have found my medium. Just maybe, with the humble coloured pencil, I can add a certain je ne sais quoi to my blog and thus, to my life.
If nothing else, I am sure The Four Little Seymours will approve! They like colouring.
