The Four Little Seymours wanted a dog.

The Four Little Seymours have wanted a dog, in varying degrees, for several years now.

They love dogs.

I have resisted. Big Seymour has resisted. We have a lot going on. We don’t have buckets of spare cash, and the house is still something of a project…

But, I repeat, the Four Little Seymours wanted a dog.

Boy Seymour was frequently reduced to tears because he didn’t have a dog.

Little Seymour Number Two would draw dogs, and dream of a time when she could own one.

Little Seymour Number One is keen to do more walking.

And Mini Seymour? I have realised that she has the attention span of a gnat, and so she may want a dog more than anything one minute, but then something shiny will float past her on the wind and she will want that instead. So, her argument for getting a dog was not very convincing.

I have had promises made to pick up poo and get up early. I have had letters – very heartfelt letters, stating all the reasons why a dog is necessary.

Yet we did not get a dog – for many reasons. Mainly, we lived in a shed for two years. It was never going to work with a muddy puppy and nowhere to put it. Prior to that, the Little Seymours were too young, and prior to that, I kept having babies.

But here we are, in 2020, living back in The Funny Little Bungalow, with hard floors and no carpet as yet. The garden has been made dog-proof, and our family timetable is such that it could just work…

And so, last Friday, we got a dog. This move was carefully planned and saved-for, but all without the Little Seymours’ knowledge. They found out last Wednesday that they were getting a pup, and he arrived on Friday. Their reaction, when they found out about him, was priceless – and despite my (ongoing) reservations about a canine chap in our house, the moment we revealed our plans to them made it all worthwhile.

And the good news is, you too can share in that moment, when it will be broadcast on BBC2 later in the year, as part of a doggy documentary.

Yes, The Four Little Seymours ar going to be on telly AGAIN.

Such fun!
